Fyodor still remembers the first day he arrived at that brothel lost in the Yugoslavian plain. He had been drawn there by a newspaper ad— “Cook Wanted”—and it ended up being the only place he ever considered home. Five years of war have passed since he left that house, which he now returns to, hoping to rebuild it from the ashes and start a new life. In this unique and desolate setting, he will share his daily life with two strangers caring for a newborn, an old friend fleeing her past, and Rita, the former madame and owner of the brothel, who bears the shadow of fear etched into her eyes. Gathered around the kitchen table and isolated from the devastation, they will, for a moment, resemble a family willing to do the unimaginable to survive.
