Alejandro Palomas (Barcelona, 1967) holds a degree in English Philology from the University of Barcelona and a Master of Arts in Poetics from the New College of California. He has contributed to various newspapers and publications and has translated authors such as Katherine Mansfield, Gertrude Stein, Willa Cather, and Jeanette Winterson, among others.
In 2002 he was selected as FNAC New Talent for his novel El tiempo del corazón. In 2008 he was a finalist for the City of Torrevieja Novel Prize with El secreto de los Hoffman, which was adapted for the stage in 2009. In 2011 he published El tiempo que nos une, adapted for the theatre in 2023 under the title La isla del Aire, directed by Mario Gas and starring Nuria Espert. That same year he was a finalist for the Primavera Novel Prize with El alma del mundo.
In 2013 he published Agua cerrada, and in 2014 Una madre —winner of the Mandarache Prize 2016 and scheduled for a stage adaptation at the end of 2026—, the first volume of a tetralogy completed by Un perro, Un amor —winner of the Nadal Prize 2018— and Una vida (2025), all published by Ed. Destino. In 2015 he published Un hijo (Joaquim Ruyra Prize 2015, National Prize for Children’s and Young Adult Literature 2016, Protagonista Jove Prize 2016, Fundación Cuatrogatos Prize 2016, IBBY International Honour Award), whose film adaptation will be released in cinemas in May 2026. Adapted for the stage in Malaysia in 2025, Un hijo is the first volume of a trilogy completed by Un secreto (2019) and a third work to be published imminently.
In 2021 he published Un país con tu nombre (Ed. Destino), in 2022 the testimonial work Esto no se dice (Ed. Destino), and in 2025 El día que mi hermana quiso volar (Nube de Tinta).
As a poet, he has published the poetry collections Quiero, poesía reunida 2012–2018 (Vandalia), Una flor, and Un después (Letraversal Ed.).
His work has been translated into more than 25 languages.
