To commemorate the millennium of the founding of Montserrat, we are re-releasing one of Coia Valls’ finest novels, which tells the story of how twelve monks founded the monastery.
It all began on an infinite mountain, the great lost episode of our history. A vision of the beginnings of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat.
At the beginning of the 9th century, Abbot Oliva made a decision that disrupted the established order. A small group of monks settled in one of the hermitages with the mission of laying the foundations of the monastery. Among them was Dalmau Savarés, a former soldier of Count Berenguer Ramon I, who was torn between two mutually exclusive futures: the transformative spirituality of Basilio, the hermit, versus the worldly power of the Church.
Coia Valls meticulously recreates a lost episode of our history with her masterful attention to detail. It is a tribute to the mountain of Montserrat and to the sea that once occupied this magical territory at the dawn of time.
